Daniel’s new job has him home during our waking hours approximately 5 hours per week.  We went from having him home with us every night for dinner, and I would complain about not having him home every Sunday, to him working double digit hours per day from early morning to late at night, nearly every day.  The kids and I are all adjusting to mama being the only one around.  For the first two months I embraced the challenge. I made dinner nearly every night, ordering pizza when it wasn’t possible.  Kept the house as clean as I could.  The kids would help easily with little chores.  But now that the charm has worn off, things are getting harder.  I’m frustrated that Daniel works so much, the kids miss him, my fuse is getting shorter, I don’t have a break, bedtimes are tiresome, blah blah blah.

This week Daniel has off Monday and Tuesday.  He had errands to run so the kids went to school like a normal day and then he and I met for lunch.  Then for a couple drinks.  Then I called in to work.  Then we grabbed a hotel room…to swim of course.  After we picked the kids up, we took them out for burgers then surprised them by taking them to the hotel to swim and spend the night.  It was so much fun and so spontaneous.  We swam for about an hour, we had the huge pool and hot tub to ourselves, then went upstairs where all five of us battled and wiggled trying to get comfortable enough to fall asleep.  The last one finally went out at 10:30.

This morning we had a carb-filled hotel breakfast of waffles, bagels, muffins, croissants, and pastries and headed out to a regular Tuesday.

It was a really nice, special, unexpected moment and the kids were happy and giggly all evening.
